This is Not My Hat

A simple, yet humorously, written picture book about a mischievous, little fish with a hat that is not his. It’s an unexpected and fresh story told from an underwater perspective about a big fish searching the sea for his extra small hat, taken by another fish while he’s sleeping. The storyline is driven by very human aspects, which makes it all the more comical.

Klassen, J. (2012). This is not my hat. Boston, MA: Candlewick.

Evaluative Criteria: Setting

  • Set under water, this book calls the reader to use their imagination and appreciate life in the sea. The setting is what sets this book apart from it’s siblings. It’s ‘out of the box’ style is appealing to young readers because it’s the usual, conventional setting you see in children’s books. Elements like this one make this a quality picture book with more to smile at.
